Cypress Gardens Founded by Dick and Julie Pope

Cypress Gardens.jpg

Cypress Gardens was founded by Frank C. Pope, Sr.'s  nephew, Richard "Dick" Pope and Dick's wife Julie.  It was opened near Winterhaven, Florida on January 1, 1936.  It was Florida's first commercial theme park.

The botanical gardens were planted by Dick and Julie. The park was also famously known for it's Southern Belles, and it's water ski shows. In fact, it became known as the "Water Ski Capitol of the World."  Many world water skiing records were being set there at the park.  Dick Pope, Sr. thought the colorful gardens would also be an attraction for photographers. He was right! It also became a popular location for tv, film and commercials.  Portions of the 1952 film "This is Cinerama" was filmed at the Cypress Gardens. Dick and Julie Pope sent the California Popes all tickets to the movie show.  Vanessa Taylor Lorenzen says, she remembers that she and all her other Pope cousins went to see the show together.

Though Dick Pope, Sr. welcomed the Disney coming to Florida in 1971, it also created competition for Cypress Gardens.  Dick Pope, Sr. retired in the early 1980's and transferred the park to his son, Dick Pope Jr.  Dick Pope, Jr. sold the park in 1985. Over the years, Cypress Gardens transferred ownership several more times. Cypress Gardens officially closed it's doors  in 2009. In 2011 it became the home for Legoland. Parts of the botanical gardens are preserved inside Legoland.
